New intelligence for Africa’s hardest problems

Neolence is a research lab. We start where the need is real and build here what Africa has long had to import.

Mission

We ask what Africa could engineer for itself, and do the research to find out.

The questions we’re working on

  1. 01

Can enzymes be engineered for Africa’s own conditions: its heat, its feedstocks, its processes?

  2. 02

Can AI narrow millions of possible enzyme variants down to a handful worth testing, so local labs can afford to engineer them?

  3. 03

Can that engineering happen here, close to the industries that use it?

Enzyme engineering is where we start. Other programs are in design.

Research program 01

AlphaX

The question
Can enzymes be engineered in Africa for the conditions they will actually run in?
Why it matters
Enzymes do essential work in farming, food processing, brewing, animal feed, textiles, leather, detergents, medicine, biofuels and waste treatment. Engineering them here keeps the knowledge, and the value, close to the industries that use them.
The approach
AlphaX is designed to narrow millions of possible variants down to about 20 candidates for lab testing. AlphaX is designed to learn from every experiment a partner lab runs.

Where it stands Stage: building the engine. Next: first validation with a partner lab.

Designed to engineer enzymes for African conditions

Our in-house enzyme-design engine. Built to design enzymes for real industrial problems; invited partner labs make and test them.

How the lab thinks

The intelligence that solves Africa’s problems should be built here.

  1. Close to the problem. We work where the need is, with the people who know the conditions first-hand.
  2. Local is the spec. Heat, supply and cost here are design requirements, not afterthoughts.
  3. Built to stay. What we learn and build here stays here, and keeps growing.

From the bench to the producer

Research, then engineering, then industry.

  1. 01

    Research

Start with a real problem, and study it at the bench.

  2. 02

    Engineering

Build for the conditions it will run in here.

  3. 03

    Industry

Develop it with the producers who will use it.

Founder

Godwin David

Godwin is a biochemistry graduate of the University of Maiduguri. For his final-year project he worked on a thermostable endoglucanase from Bacillus subtilis.

He founded Neolence, based in Yola, Adamawa State, to build that kind of work here.
